Imagine a 'smart pill' that can sense problems in your intestines and actively release the appropriate drugs. We have the biological understanding to create such a device, but we're still searching for electronic materials (like batteries and circuits) that pose no risk if they get stuck in our bodies. Now researchers present a vision for creating safe, consumable electronics, such as those powered by the charged ions within our digestive tracts.After years of investment and development, wireless devices contained in swallowable capsules are now reaching the market.


Companies such as Smart-pill based in Buffalo, New York and Israel-based Given Imaging (PillCam) market capsules the size of vitamin tablets.

These pills contain sensors or tiny cameras that collect information as they travel through the gastrointestinal tract before being excreted from the body a day or two later.

These new electronic inventions transmit information such as acidity, pressure and temperature levels or images of the esophagus and intestine to your doctor's computer for analysis.

Doctors often use invasive methods such as catheters, endoscopic instruments or radioisotopes for collecting information about the digestive tract. So device companies have been developing easier, less intrusive ways, to gather information.

Digestive diseases and disorders can include symptoms such as acid reflux, bloating, heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation, difficulty swallowing or loss of appetite.

One of the main challenges is determining just what is happening in the stomach and intestines.Doctors can inspect the colon and peer into the stomach using endoscopic instruments. But some areas cannot be easily viewed, and finding out how muscles are working can be difficult.

Electronic pills are being used to measure muscle contraction, ease of passage and other factors to reveal information unavailable in the past.

The smart-box, similar to a black box for airplanes, records details about how your car is driven, which can result in cheap car insurance for responsible drivers.

The device is connected to the electronics in your car and collects a wide criteria of information such as time, speed, braking, cornering, acceleration and location.

The smart--box data is wireless transferred in real time to the insurance company and provides a profile of when, where and how you drive. This profile is then used to compare insurance rates and to reward low-risk driving behavior with cheap insurance rates.

Drivers are high-risk when they drive irresponsibly such as speeding, frequent lane changing, driving in high-risk locations or at high-risk times such as in heavy traffic or late at night.

These new electronic inventions are intended to replace the standard practice of categorizing drivers into group behavior to determine insurance coverage and premium payments.

For example, young drivers are more likely to drive fast, drive at night. and use a cell phone while driving. Statistically, young drivers are more likely to cause an accident so insurance companies charge them higher rates to cover the costs of accident claims.

So even if you're a young, responsible driver, you will pay high insurance rates because of group behavior.This technology allows you to provide proof that your driving behavior doesn't fit the pattern of your demographic group.All the information collected about your driving can be viewed online - including what you're doing well and what could be improved. Your insurance premium is then calculated according to your driving profile.

This latest science invention is a spray-on invisible thin glass coating that sterilizes, protects and strengthens surfaces.

The coating also repels water, dirt, stains, mildew, fungus, bacteria and viruses.The film is
approximately 500 times thinner than a human hair and has multiple applications and uses in numerous fields. The coating is environmentally friendly and can be applied within seconds to make any surface easy to clean and safe from anti-microbes. Interestingly enough, it provides higher levels of sterility than surfaces cleaned with bleach or other chemicals.

A liquid coating invented at the Saarbrücken Institute for New Materials in Turkey and patented by Nano pool GmbH Germany, is a flexible and breathable spray-on glass film. 

The film is approximately 100 nano meters thick (500 times thinner than a human hair) and has multiple applications and uses in numerous fields. The coating is environmentally friendly (Winner of the Green Apple Award)

It can be applied within seconds to make any surface very easy to clean and safe from anti-microbes (Winner of the NHS Smart Solutions Award).

The special glass coating known as "SiO2 ultra-thin layering" protects practically any surface against water, UV radiation, dirt, heat, acid, stains, mildew, fungus. bacteria and viruses. 


Trials by food processing plants in Germany have concluded that surfaces coated with liquid glass only need hot water for cleaning. In fact, the coating provided higher levels of sterility than surfaces cleaned with bleach or other chemicals.

A year long trial at a British hospital in South-port, Lancashire is to be published soon with very promising results for a wide range of coating applications used on medical equipment, implants, catheters, sutures and bandages.

Trials for in-vivo applications are confidential, but Neil McClellan d, the UK Project Manager for Nano-pool GmbH, describes the results as "stunning".

Items such as stents can be coated, and this will create anti sticking features. Catheters and sutures which are a source of infection, will also cease to be problematic.Colin Humphreys, a professor of materials science at Cambridge University, commented that liquid glass appears to have a wide range of applications and that the product 'looks impressive'.

The investment opportunities for this latest science invention seem endless - buildings, vehicles, appliances, clothing etc. can have dirt and germ free surfaces without using toxic coatings or chemicals.
